There are three major factors to consider when choosing a backpack; comfort, item accessibility, and item security.  Taking these factors into account, there are two main styles of backpacks used for traveling, the Top Loading Backpack and the Panel/Front Loading Backpack.

The top loading backpack is the most common backpack, as it is typically more durable and comfortable.  This main disadvantage is that in order to access stuff at the bottom of the bag, the entire contents of the bag need to be removed.  Newer models do have side entry zippers, but accessing your gear and repacking is difficult.  Security is also an issue if you want to use back locks on this back.  With the top snap system, it is pretty much impossible to prevent someone from getting in with back locks.

The panel or front loading backpack is more like a school backpack with the front zipping down.  This allows you to access you backpack similar to a suitcase.  This style can also have many storage compartments and has a much more efficient use of space.  The negative side of this backpack is that it can be uncomfortable for some individuals as, they tend not to fit every body size.  Security on this style is great, as the zippers tend to have lock loops for bag locks.

When searching for a backpack, it is important to pick a bag that will have adequate storage space for your trip.  Usually the name of the backpack will indicate the storage capacity.  For example, the High Sierra Explorer 55 Frame Pack indicates that the storage capacity is 55 L.

If your trip is greater than 2 weeks, we recommend a backpack that is at least 50 L in capacity.  If you have a bigger than average body size, we recommend no less than a 60 L capacity backpack.

For both types of backpacks, attempt to try them on at an outdoor store before buying.  Some stores will even load the bags with weights to simulate how the backpack will feel when loaded.  For Canadians, provides a vast selection of quality backpacks in both styles.  Both North Face and High Sierra also make numerous types of both backpacks.
