Traveling without a digital camera
is a big mistake. With all the stuff you will see on your trip, the cost to capture it all on a film camera just isn’t feasible. Any digital camera will work, but we suggest a camera that has at least 5 megapixels resolution and 1x optical zoom. You will be thankful when you return from your trip and the quality of your pictures is outstanding. Canon and Nikon make several models that are inexpensive and fit these criteria.
If you have some extra money and want to ensure you get really good pictures, buy a Digital SLR type camera and an optical lens. The resolution and many different shooting functions, will allow you to capture any moment on your trip. The major downside with bringing an SLR type camera is carrying it around. You can use a neck strap to carry the camera or a camera bag, but if you aren’t comfortable leaving in your back at the hostel it can prevent you from doing some activities. Not every Digital SLR camera come with a lens. If your camera doesn't come with a lens make sure you buy at least an 18-55mm lens. This lens will handle your everyday needs. If you want additional zoom, look for a lens that is 75-300mm. Make sure that you buy a lens that is compatible with your camera. Not all lens are interchangeable between camera brands. If you are new to SLR cameras, look for lenses that are only autofocus.

No matter what model digital camera you choose, make sure you buy at least one 4 GB high speed memory card. If you don’t have enough memory card space, you will have to download to a laptop, burn to a CD, or delete some photos while traveling. It can be quite expensive to burn photos to a CD. If you bring more than one memory card on your trip, and your camera goes missing, you will still have some of your photos.
